"The 701 looks best on paper, but suffers from micro-corrections in speed ... . The 1249 has a soft rubber belt that pushes and pulls.
You can hear the speed fluctuations.
The 1229 sounds best. Nothing like a nice idler-drive. Rumble? Adhere to the suggested service schedule. Also, toss the crappy wood base. It resonates like a drum. Better than any of these is the 2nd design 1219. Still has the metal knobs and the ribs moulded into the underside of the platter. But the cueing problem was eliminated. Nicest Dual I have ever heard. My every-day spinner.
I have a friend who owns a really top-notch turntable-repair shop. This guy really knows what he is doing, and has been doing it for 35 years. He and I have had this discussion before. We have done the A/B comparisons. And our common conclusion on the subject is, that even the most-perfect Dual 701 is junk. Perhaps we really do have golden ears. But our favorite Dual is the 1219; followed by the 1229, and then the Q, when you add the anti-resonance filter from the 701.
All models mentioned in this discussion have 8 3/4" arms. But, the lighter-mass design on the 701 and 1229Q are a hinderance to good sound- they resonate."
